Sciatica

Guided exercises for sciatica relief

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. It commonly affects adults between 30 and 60, particularly those who sit for long hours, lift heavy loads, or have a disc bulge pressing near the nerve.

Common Symptoms

  • Sharp or burning pain running down one leg
  • Tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles” in the leg or foot
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, or sneezing
  • Weakness in the leg or foot in more severe cases
  • Difficulty finding a comfortable position to sit or sleep

How Physiotherapy Helps

  • Gentle spinal mobilisation to reduce pressure and irritation around the nerve.
  • Nerve gliding exercises that help the sciatic nerve move freely again.
  • Progressive strengthening of the core and hip muscles to support the lower back.
  • A staged return to activity so you regain confidence in bending, sitting, and walking.

What to Expect

Your first visit includes a full assessment. Most treatment plans run 4–12 sessions depending on severity.

Seek urgent medical care if you have sudden severe weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder/bowel control.

FAQs

How is sciatica different from ordinary back pain?

Sciatica follows the path of the sciatic nerve down the leg, while ordinary back pain usually stays in the back. The leg symptoms — shooting pain, tingling, or numbness — are the distinguishing signs, and treatment focuses on calming the irritated nerve.

Will I need surgery for sciatica?

Most cases of sciatica improve with conservative care including physiotherapy. Surgery is only considered when there is severe or worsening weakness, or when pain persists despite thorough non-surgical treatment. We will refer you onward if we ever see signs that you need a surgical opinion.

How long does recovery take?

Mild cases often settle within a few weeks; more stubborn nerve irritation can take a few months. Your physiotherapist will track your progress session by session and adjust the plan so you keep moving forward.
